What We’re Working On This Week: March 8-12
The Third Graders completed these great radial symmetry projects last week!
Fourth and Fifth Grade The fourth and fifth grade students will be completing their radial design collage this week in Art. Their work is very similar to the finished piece shown above, but is also very different. The work will all be displayed in the Primary School when it is complete. The 4th/5th graders will also be starting a painting project this week. We will review painting technique as we create paintings of pears. The students will view real pears, and draw and paint exactly what they see.
Second and Third Grade The second and third graders will be creating paintings of suns this week in Art. We will discuss overlapping as a tool to create visual interest and the students will draw their suns’ rays overlapping and exaggerated. We will add faces to the suns and chalk will be used for shadowing. Second Grade will complete their birthday cake paintings as needed before beginning the sun project.
First Grade The First Graders have been studying the Solar System in their regular classroom, and this week in Art, we are planning on creating a painting of a planet! The students will be able to choose which planet they would like to fingerpaint. When dry, we will discuss VALUE- the lightness or darkness of an object- and use black chalk pastel to create a shadowing on the planet. This will turn their circles into spheres, making them look more realistic! We will use Mod Podge to create a starry background for our work.
Kindergarten The Kindergarteners will be creating a collage of their names this week in Art. This will be a review of the Element of Art- SHAPE. The students will paint and cut the letters of their names, adding them to a shape collage background.
Pre-K and Preppers The Pre-K and Prepper students will be painting rainbows this week in Art. When dry, they will decorate their rainbows with sequins and glitter.
Pre-Preppers The Pre-Preppers will be paintng blue skies this week with watercolor paint. They will then add a rainbow collage when dry.
What We’re Working On This Week: March 1-5
The Fourth and Fifth Graders completed their African Mask drawings! These are displayed in the Primary School. They are awesome!
Fourth and Fifth Grade The 4th and 5th graders completed their African Mask designs last week. They did a wonderful job with these. Our next project will be an Origami radial design. Origami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding. Radial symmetry is a design that originates in the center and radiates out to the edges in a circular form. The result is symmetrical no matter which direction the paper is turned or the page is viewed. The students will be folding paper and using their folds to create a radial design.
Third Grade This week, the students will be completing their folded paper design if necessary. If time allows, we will begin preliminary drawings for our next project- a sun painting.
Second Grade The 2nd graders will be completing their “Dessert with Matisse” projects this week in Art. The students have had fun drawing giant birthday cakes for this project! They are taking their time and completing their work very neatly.
First Grade and Kindergarten This week, the Kindergarteners and First Graders will be working on line drawings of cars and trucks! I have noticed an interest in drawing cars and trucks from the students during free draw time, and wanted to give them an opportunity to work on drawings as a class project. We will discuss contour line drawing and the students will work in pencil and Sharpie before using watercolor paint to add color to their drawings.
Pre-K The Pre-K students will be introduced to oil pastel this week. They will begin by using the tempera paint to paint lines. We will then use oil pastel to add patterns, lines, and decorations on the dry paint. Oil pastels are a lot like crayon, with more intense color, and they are a little messier!
Preppers The Prepper students will be creating a fabric collage this week. They will also be practicing with scissors, creating an animal paper cut and glue collage.
Pre-Preppers The Pre-Preppers will be creating a construction paper collage this week. These students will also be practicing with scissors- learning how to hold them, and how to move their fingers up and down to make cuts.
What We’re Working On This Week: February 22-26
The Kindergarteners used chalk pastel to create drawings of lions!
Fourth and Fifth Grade This week, the 4th and 5th graders will be completing their African Masks. The students used tissue paper to add color to their drawings last week, and had a great time using spray bottles filled with paint to add background color. This week we will add beads, raffia, and collage materials to the masks to finish them. The next project for 4th and 5th grade is an Origami 3-dimensional collage.
Third Grade The 3rd grade students will be beginning a folded paper collage this week. We will briefly discuss Origami- the traditional Japanese art of paper folding. The students will be folding paper squares and arranging them into a radial design. A radial design is built around a circle’s radius and is symmetrical no matter which way you turn it.
The 2nd and 3rd graders created Space Art for display in the new Space-themed Market in the Preschool.
Second Grade The 2nd grade students will be having “Dessert With Matisse” this week! The students saw some of the work being done by First Grade and are excited to also work on this project! They will be drawing giant birthday cakes and filling their cakes with designs and patterns often seen in the work of Henri Matisse. This is a fun project.
First Grade The First Graders will be completing their birthday cake drawings this week. The next project for First Grade will be a name painting/collage.
Kindergarten The Kindergarteners will be creating a flower mosaic this week in Art. A mosaic is art created by arranging and placing small pieces of stone, tile, or glass. We will be using construction paper square mosaic pieces to create our mosaic.
Pre-K The Pre-K students will be using the spray paint bottles to create a design of their hands this week. This project is messy, but tons of fun! And the results are beautiful! The Van Gogh project from last week was a success! The students created sunflower collages and sunflower paintings. This work will be displayed in the Preschool and on this website soon.
Preppers The Preppers will be working on two projects this week. They will first create a collage of a flower using construction paper. The second project will be a sequins and glitter design. This project will be great for fine motor skills!
Pre-Preppers The Pre-Preppers will also be working on a flower collage this week. Come on, warm weather! When the collage is complete, the students will create coffee filter paintings.
What We’re Working On This Week: February 15-19

The 3rd Graders’ Palmetto Trees are displayed in the Primary School!
Fourth and Fifth Grade This week, the 4th and 5th grade students will be continuing their African Mask project. Last week, the students worked on some wonderful drawings. This week, we will begin adding color to the masks by using tissue paper, markers, and if time allows, SPRAY PAINT! We are all excited about spraying our papers with paint! Three-dimensional objects such as beading and fringe items will also be added to the masks.
Second and Third Grade The 2nd and 3rd graders will be working on an outer space project this week. The students will review VALUE as they use shadow to create realistic planets with paint and chalk. They will create a starry background using paint splatters and glitter. This project will be displayed in the new Space-themed market in the Preschool.
First Grade The 1st graders will be having dessert with Henri Matisse this week! The students are going to be creating a painting of a birthday cake. They will add decoration to their cakes using some of the patterning elements common to the work of Matisse. I’m looking forward to seeing the results! Below is a picture of the hearts created by First Grade last week. All of these are displayed in the Primary School.

Kindergarten The Kindergarteners will be using chalk pastel this week to create drawings of a lion. We will be focusing on the lion’s face and mane. The students will also have a chance to paint their choice- a lion, an elephant, or a zebra. This project correlates with the students’ study of Africa in their regular classrooms.
Pre-K The Pre-K children will be viewing examples this week of Vincent Van Gogh’s sunflower paintings. Last week, the students created tissue paper flowers. We will use these to create a vase of sunflowers like Van Gogh this week.
Preppers The Preppers will be using paint in spray bottles this week to create spray painted hand prints. This will be a fun project!
Pre-Preppers The Pre-Prepper students will be using tempera paint this week to create some bright paper paintings. We are working on painting technique and how to use the paintbrush correctly. The students will also have the chance to do some line gluing this week.
